Background of the study:
Forensic anthropology has become an indispensable tool in modern crime scene investigations, particularly in regions like Oshimili South. This interdisciplinary field applies skeletal analysis and other anthropological techniques to assist law enforcement in identifying victims and understanding trauma patterns (Okoro, 2023; Adeyemi, 2024). In Delta State, forensic anthropologists collaborate closely with police investigators to reconstruct crime scenes and provide insights into the circumstances surrounding deaths. The scientific methods employed include bone analysis, facial reconstruction, and trauma interpretation, which contribute significantly to resolving cases that lack traditional evidence (Eze, 2023). Recent advances in technology have enhanced the precision of these analyses, enabling forensic experts to deliver more accurate results (Ogunleye, 2025). The integration of forensic anthropology into criminal investigations underscores its value in addressing complex cases, thereby supporting the judicial process and promoting community safety (Okoro, 2023).

Statement of the problem:
Despite its proven utility, forensic anthropology in Oshimili South faces challenges such as limited resources, insufficient training, and coordination gaps between forensic experts and law enforcement. These issues hinder the full potential of forensic evidence in crime scene investigations (Adeyemi, 2024).

Objectives of the study:

  1. To assess the role of forensic anthropology in crime scene investigations.
  2. To identify challenges faced by forensic experts in Oshimili South.
  3. To recommend measures to enhance forensic collaboration.

Research questions:

  1. How does forensic anthropology contribute to crime scene investigations?
  2. What challenges affect the effective use of forensic anthropology?
  3. How can inter-agency collaboration be improved?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Forensic anthropology significantly aids in solving crime scenes.
  2. Resource limitations negatively affect forensic outcomes.
  3. Improved training and coordination will enhance investigative results.

Significance of the study:
This study will highlight the critical role of forensic anthropology in crime investigations, offering recommendations to improve resource allocation and inter-agency cooperation for enhanced public safety (Ogunleye, 2025).

Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to the impact of forensic anthropology on crime scene investigations in Oshimili South Local Government Area. It does not extend to other forensic applications or regions.

Definitions of terms:

  • Forensic anthropology: The application of anthropological methods to legal investigations.
  • Crime scene investigation: The process of collecting and analyzing evidence from a crime.
  • Trauma analysis: Examination of injuries to understand the cause and manner of death.
